The sheriff for Suffolk County, Steven Tompkins, was arrested Friday morning in Florida after he was indicted on two counts of extortion , federal prosecutors said.

The indictment that was unsealed Friday accuses Tompkins of extorting a cannabis company, saying he gained $50,000 in company stock by threatening to revoke an important partnership with the sheriff’s office.

The two counts of extortion under color of official right each carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison.
