FONTANA, Calif. (KABC) -- Fontana schools will begin conducting voluntary, random drug testing on its middle and high school students - if their parents consent.

The program is aimed at supporting the Fontana Unified School District's drug abuse prevention efforts and was unanimously approved by the school board on Wednesday.

The new rule will apply to students participating in athletics, JROTC, and after school activities, like band, choir, drama and dance.

The district said participation in the program will be based upon parent or guardian consent. If parents agree, their children will take monthly tests.

If a student fails, they won't be reported to law enforcement but will instead be referred to substance abuse programs.
