The National Weather Service has issued an air quality alert for Aug. 11-12 for multiple northern Michigan counties because of smoke drifting south from Canadian wildfires.
According to the alert issued Aug. 10, Keweenaw, Ontonagon, Houghton, Baraga, Marquette, Alger, Luce, Gogebic, Iron, Dickinson, Menominee, Delta and Schoolcraft counties should expect elevated levels of fine particulates in the air (PM 2.5) as smoke moves into Michigan. The alert includes Mackinac Island and the Straits of Mackinac area.
"It is recommended that, when possible, you avoid strenuous outdoor activities, especially those with heart disease and respiratory diseases such as asthma," the weather service said on Aug. 10.
