BATON ROUGE, La. — Baton Rouge Police Sgt. Caleb Eisworth, a decorated 23-year veteran of the department, died Sunday at a Baton Rouge hospital, nearly two months after being critically injured in what police say was an intentional attack.

Eisworth, 44, was injured June 16 when a man allegedly rammed his vehicle into the sergeant’s police motorcycle on Greenwell Springs Road as Eisworth was heading home from a shift.

The 41-year-old suspect was arrested the same day and initially charged with criminal damage to property, hate crimes, resisting an officer, and an upgraded charge of first-degree murder.

The news of his passing spread throughout Louisiana's law enforcement community, who shared their condolences and honors on social media.
