CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. — A driver was critically injured and airlifted to a hospital after a work van crashed into a Fifth Third Bank ATM and building on Saturday.
The crash happened around 9:14 p.m. on Saturday at the bank at the intersection of Highway 601 and Highway 24/27 in Cabarrus County , according to Midland Fire and Rescue. The van struck and snapped a telephone pole before slamming into the ATM and bank building.
The driver, whose condition was not immediately available, had to be extricated from the vehicle after it was stabilized with assistance from multiple fire departments.
Cabarrus County EMS treated the critically injured patient at the scene before requesting a helicopter. Highway 601 traffic was shut down to establish a helicopter landing zone north of the Highway 2
