Previous coverage: Missing teen's body identified

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Following the discovery of a body confirmed in a preliminary investigation to be that of missing teenager Giovanni Pelletier, an autopsy was conducted Sunday.

Giovanni, 18, was visiting Florida when he disappeared along Interstate 75 in Manatee County on Aug. 1.

On Friday, a body found near a retention pond in that area was confirmed to be the missing teen.

According to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, due to the advanced state of decomposition, further forensic testing is still required.

Detectives believe the body had been in the pond for days before floating to the surface, which is why prior searches of the area did not yield its discovery.
