There’s something fishy about the name of Seattle’s most recent lunar event. Known as a sturgeon moon, the August full moon Saturday evening bathed the city in abundant evening light.

A full moon occurs when the sun illuminates 100% of the Moon’s near side as it orbits Earth, according to NASA’s moon observer. The sturgeon moon was also a supermoon, meaning a full moon approaching the point in its elliptical orbit closest to Earth.

This month’s full moon gets its name from the lake sturgeon. One of North America’s largest freshwater fish, lake sturgeon measure up to 6 feet long and weigh 30 to 80 pounds. By comparison, the heaviest fish thrown at Pike Place Fish Market have been 40-pound halibut, fishmonger Ryan Shapero said Sunday.
