SAN DIEGO — Red Sox starter Brayan Bello ’s changeup was considered his best secondary pitch as he advanced through the minor league system.
It was his second most used pitch during his first full season in the big leagues in 2023 behind only his sinker. Opponents batted just .196 with a .291 slugging percentage against it.
But he hasn’t had quite the same feel for it this year and it has been his fourth-most-used pitch.
It looked sharp though in a 6-2 loss to the Padres at Petco Park on Sunday.
“I thought his changeup might have been the best changeup I’ve seen him have,” third baseman Alex Bregman said.
The numbers all suggest he had his best changeup this season. Six of his 13 swings and misses came on the changeup. But despite generating whiffs on all six swings the Padres too
