The Government has announced it is expanding a scheme that allows foreign criminals to be deported before their appeals are heard, nearly tripling the number of countries covered from eight to 23.

Known as the “Deport Now Appeal Later” scheme, it forces foreign nationals from specified countries to take part in their UK appeal hearings remotely after they have been removed to their home nation.

Ministers claimed the move is designed to prevent offenders from exploiting the appeals system to delay deportation and to ease pressure on UK prisons and detention centres.
