Tom Cleverley thought Brendan Wiredu took 'a forward step' with his performance as a second half substitute in Plymouth Argyle's 2-0 defeat by Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.

The midfielder had endured a difficult debut for the Pilgrims when they lost 3-1 to Barnsley at Home Park in their season-opening game on August 2. He conceded an early own goal, struggled after that and was yellow-carded shortly before the interval following a scuffle with Reds' defender Jack Shepherd.

Wiredu was taken off by Cleverley at half-time and in the aftermath of the match the summer signing from Fleetwood Town received a lot of abuse on social media from some fans, which led to Argyle issuing a club statement which condemned that as not acceptable.
