Last November, my 45-year-old mother nearly didn’t get to vote. She filled out what she thought was the right form to vote by mail, only to get a confusing letter from the county saying she’d used an “absentee” application instead of an “early mail ballot” request. My mother is an immigrant and has little English proficiency. Imagine all the low-proficiency English speakers all across New York that have faced similar circumstances due to unnecessary confusion.

This is exactly why New York needs to pass S6995 — a commonsense bill that would streamline our state’s needlessly complicated mail voting system. At a time when other states are making voting more accessible, New York’s current laws create unnecessary hurdles that trip up everyone from seniors to military families.
