(WKYT) - In the lead up to America turning 250 years old, we are looking back at every day in ‘This Day In History.’
On this day in United States history, in 2008, the U.S. 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay team won gold and smashed the world record at the Beijing Olympics.
The team was made up of Michael Phelps, Garrett Weber-Gale, Cullen Jones and Jason Lezak, who had a heroic comeback in the final 50 meters to out-touch the rival French relay by 0.8 seconds.
The team still holds the record today, making it the oldest long-course world record in swimming.
