WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump is deploying the National Guard to patrol D.C. streets and will be taking over the District's police force on an emergency basis, he announced at a press conference Monday morning.

In order to take over D.C. Police, he is invoking Section 740 of the Home Rule Act . This allows him to take over the city's police force for no longer than 48 hours. In that time, he is likely to make changes to the department's leadership. At the press conference, Trump claimed that D.C.'s crime rate is vastly higher than other major capital cities throughout the world, though it's unclear where his numbers are coming from.
