This is a hair-on-fire moment, (“ Trump fires Bureau of Labor Statistics director after dismal employment report ‚” Aug. 1). When our president fires an independent, non-partisan, Senate-confirmed commissioner for releasing a report whose numbers he didn’t like, our country is in a world of hurt.

It’s old news that President Donald Trump thrives on making unprecedented moves. But it’s past time to say enough. The data that comes from these reports is essential to stock markets, the Federal Reserve, government and private business. Trump’s whimsy in suggesting these numbers are " rigged " is based on what...his gut? He is, without proof, calling into question a central tenet vital to the functioning of our economy.

Once credibility is eroded, it is so very difficult to regain trust. I
