Protective fire services officials across Quinte and beyond are declaring total burn bans to counter near-drought conditions which have already sparked a major 12.9-hectare wildfire Sunday in Marmora and Lake municipality.

Tinderbox conditions are prone to the rapid spread of fire through brush, forest and grasslands leading to larger fires that are extremely difficult to contain and extinguish, said firefighting authorities.

Belleville Fire and Emergency Services, for example, issued a total burn ban effective immediately, in accordance with the Open-Air Burning By-law.
