Wildfires spread across southern Europe on Sunday as the region grapple with another heatwave.

On Monday, Portuguese authorities said three major fires that started over the weekend were of concern.

Around 2,000 firefighters were on the ground to try to tackle the flames.

On Sunday temperatures reached 43 degrees Celsius (109 Fahrenheit) in some areas of the country.

Firefighters in Croatia battled a large wildfire east of Split, preventing flames from reaching homes and hotels. Several tourists were evacuated.

Some 150 firefighters and 3 specialized planes helped prevent the fire from burning homes and small hotels in the area.

In Spain, multiple wildfires were also causing havoc with the regions of Castilla Leon and Navarra among the worst-hit areas.

Operations have also been underway for more than 48 hours to extinguish multiple fires on Mount Vesuvius in southern Italy, as hot temperatures and winds fueled a fire that has been burning since Friday.

On Monday, 80 firefighters continued to work to put out the flames on the volcano, with reinforcements arriving from regions across Italy.

Fires also raged on the outskirts of Podgorica, Montenegro. More than 20 fire service vehicles have been deployed in the area around the capital in an effort to protect residential areas.
