LANSING, Mich. — Over seven months after a Michigan Senator vacated her seat to be sworn into the United States House of Representatives, that vacated seat has still not been filled.

Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet (D) was sworn in to the U.S. Congress on Jan. 3, 2025, and since that date, there has been no representation for the approximately 270,000 people living in Michigan's 35th Senate District.

It is the duty of the state's governor, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, to call a special election to fill that seat, and since Rivet's departure, Whitmer has called no such election.

Now, a law firm representing seven residents from Saginaw, Midland and Bay counties is suing Gov. Whitmer to force her to call the election and fill the seat.
