NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) - State scientists said that rare exotic tick species that were detected in the state likely got there by hitchhiking on human travelers.

The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station reported on Monday that it identified four exotic tick species in the state in recent years. They were from Guatemala, Costa Rica, Belize, Tanzania, Germany, Poland, and Scotland.

The CAES said their populations have not risen to the point of a public health threat; however, it sought to remind people to check for ticks before they return home.

“People should also conduct thorough tick checks while traveling, particularly following outdoor activity in potentially tick-infested areas, and be proactive in monitoring possible symptoms following a tick bite,” said Dr. Goudarz Molaei, res
