Emergency Crews Respond to “Mass Casualty Incident,” Governor Offers Assistance

An explosion at the U.S. Steel Clairton Coke Works plant near Pittsburgh has left one person dead and dozens injured, with emergency workers on site responding to the mass casualty incident. Officials confirmed one fatality and said two people are currently unaccounted for following the blast, which occurred just before 11 a.m. Monday.

The explosion sent a plume of black smoke spiraling into the midday sky over the Monongahela Valley, a region with a long history tied to the steel industry. According to Allegheny County emergency services spokesperson Kasey Reigner, multiple people have been treated for injuries, and the county has dispatched 15 ambulances to the scene to supplement local emergency crews.
