Uber first introduced the feature in Saudi Arabia in 2019.

Uber faces litigation in which women passengers allege sexual assault against male drivers.

Detroit is one of three test cities nationwide where Uber will pilot a new driver and passenger program for women riders.

The pilot, which Uber calls a "women's preference" feature, launches in the "next few weeks," said a spokesperson on Aug. 6.

It will also be available in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

“We look forward to enhancing safety for all women,” Camiel Irving, Uber vice president of operations, told the Free Press.

In a recent news release, the company said that the program is designed to give female passengers more confidence, choice and flexibility.
