What started as a cluster of showers and thunderstorms in the far eastern Atlantic has developed into Tropical Storm Erin late Monday morning, and forecasters say the system has a good chance of becoming the first hurricane of the season.

Tropical Storm Erin developed just west of the Cabo Verde Islands off the coast of Africa and will likely get stronger and turn into a Category 1 hurricane by Thursday , according to forecasters from AccuWeather and the National Hurricane Center . It may even become a major Category 3 hurricane, with top sustained winds of 111 mph or stronger.
