Detroit — Demolition started Monday of a building that sat vacant on the city's northwest side for more than 20 years and sparked a lawsuit.
City leaders joined community members for a news conference to officially announce the demolition of the Mammoth Building, which sits at the corner of Grand River Avenue and Greenfield Road.
"I know for the neighborhood here this has been a long time coming," Mayor Mike Duggan said during the conference in a parking lot next to the building. "It's been a long struggle. I am very pleased that we are finally getting this building down."
Duggan was joined by LaJuan Counts, director of the city's Construction & Demolition Department; Councilman James Tate, who represents District 1; Detroit Corporation Counsel Conrad Mallett Jr., and others.
