OROVILLE, Calif. - Goats and sheep from Hanski Family Farms are playing a crucial role in reducing fire risks at Lake Oroville.
Officials say the animals are helping the California Department of Water Resources with fuel reduction efforts across 140 acres at the Loafer Creek Recreation Area.
The goats and sheep are grazing on grasses, leaves, poison oak, invasive weeds, and various shrubs and trees. By standing on their hind legs, they can reach up to four feet high, effectively reducing ladder fuels.
The grazing areas are enclosed with electric fences for 6-8 weeks, and informational signs are posted for public safety. Herdsmen and guard dogs are present to protect the animals while they work.
