A South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper suffered severe injuries when he was hit by a truck while conducting a traffic stop Sunday.

According to the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office, Trooper Dennis Ricks was hit by a large box truck which was passing by as Ricks conducted the traffic stop Sunday around 2 a.m. on I-26 near mile marker 166.

Orangeburg County sheriff's deputies responded and Ricks was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition Monday.

The driver of the truck, Anthony Aydlette of Hanahan, was arrested and charged with driving under suspension.

The Lexington County Sheriff's Department is investigating the crash, as the nearest agency with a reconstruction unit.
