MINOT — When it comes to the name change for the food stamps program — since 2008 we've been calling it SNAP, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — I tend to agree with former Congressman Earl Pomeroy.

He said he has a "gripe" with the new name, which he said was a "Democrats" thing. "We talk about SNAP, and no one knows what the hell they're talking about," he said during an interview on the Plain Talk podcast earlier this year. "This is food stamps. This is people getting the food they need to feed their kids."

He's right. We shouldn't be afraid to call the program what it is. He's also right that the food stamps program is, or should be, about feeding families.
