(CNN) – AOL is ditching dial-up.

The internet service was once the biggest name in internet service connectivity and is a vestige of the early days of the World Wide Web.

Many who remember the internet of the 1990s may recall the unmistakable sound of the dial-up connection that was the signature tone of getting online.

It may even come as a surprise that AOL was still offering dial-up.

As of 2023, only about 1% of U.S. households with internet subscriptions were using only a dial-up connection.

AOL will stop offering the service on Sept. 30.
