GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro is mourning the loss of a man whose fingerprints are all over the city we know today. Former Mayor Jim Melvin passed away over the weekend at the age of 91 — but his legacy will live on for generations.

Melvin served as mayor from 1971 to 1981, a decade that helped shape Greensboro’s future. City Hall now bears his name, but his work extended far beyond politics.

“He was really focused on making our area a better place for our residents,” Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan said. “It was not that he was trying to figure out a way where he could make money or how he would benefit, but was always what is the larger benefit to our community.”
