An Albuquerque father with longtime ties to Farmington was killed in a shooting late Saturday that shut down traffic on N.M. 14 in both directions for hours as New Mexico State Police conducted an investigation.

But state police have offered scarce details about the shooting, which a spokesperson described as a homicide.

The agency on Sunday referred to the incident as a “report of shots fired” without giving any indication a man had been killed.

Officer Wilson Silver, a spokesperson for the agency, confirmed Monday 48-year-old Patrick Wheeler had died at a site off the highway. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting by the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator, Silver said, adding a woman who was with Wheeler was not injured.
