The ice rink at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center in Santa Fe will remain closed through late October, at earliest, for continued repairs and improvements.

The city, which owns the facility, previously said the rink would be closed through the end of July after cooling tower and dehumidifier failures coincided with a preplanned window replacement project. Rink users are optimistic about the future of the facility, but lament the ice time they’re missing out on — and the fact that this isn’t the first extended closure they have seen.

Last summer, the rink closed for about three months because of problems with the compressors that keep the ice frozen, causing frustration for figure skaters, hockey players and instructors. And in fall 2023, the rink closed for about two months for repair
