BROOKSVILLE, Fla. (WFLA) — A Spring Hill woman was killed over the weekend while trying to check on an injured opossum, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The crash happened near the intersection between Hexam Road and Eskimo Curlew Road at around 10 p.m. on Sunday.
A Toyota Camry, driven by a 31-year-old Spring Hill man, was traveling down Hexam Road with the victim, a 27-year-old Spring Hill woman and wife of the driver, in the passenger seat.
The couple stopped, and the woman exited the car to check on the animal.
At the same time, a 19-year-old Weeki Wachee man was driving a Chrysler 300 and struck the woman while she was outside the vehicle.
The victim was taken to a local hospital, where she died of her injuries.
