NORFOLK, Va. — The first day of the trial in the high-profile death of 33-year-old Ali Muhammad ended in the emotional witness testimony of his father, anti-gun violence advocate Bilal Muhammad.

Muhammad, one of the more well-known and prominent gun violence advocates and community organizers in Hampton Roads, took the stand to conclude the first day of trial for Jalen Garces, charged with shooting and killing Muhammad's son Ali in 2023.

Investigators linked Garces to the shooting death of Ali Muhammad in the Ocean View neighborhood of Norfolk several days after his death.
