Fairfield, Iowa (KYOU) - Teenagers and their cell phones are nearly inseparable.

A new state law aims to change that. At least for when it comes to the classroom.

Ottumwa Schools were among the first in the state to ban students from using cell phones in class last year. They reported better grades and fewer behavioral issues.

Now Fairfield Schools superintendent Zach Wigle is hoping to follow suit.

“I think anytime you look at engagement or connectedness to a classroom or a learning experience. If we can remove an obstacle or something that maybe contributes to be disengaged or not as connected that’s an opportunity that I think were going to see here.“ said Wigle.

It’s part of a new state law Governor Kim Reynolds signed this past Spring.
