East Lansing — Ask the Michigan State football team’s defensive linemen why they play their position and they’ll give you a lot of different answers.

Alex VanSumeren will tell you the position chose him, a college position switch after spending his high school career at Essexville Garber in the backfield. Grady Kelly will joke that he was the “fat kid,” then tell you that his dad’s own football fandom instilled the belief that real football is played in the trenches.
