BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - Quiet summer nights have turned into restless hours for some neighbors living along Highway 280 in Mountain Brook.

The problem isn’t the road project itself - it’s the pounding, grinding and rumble of heavy machinery echoing through the neighborhood well past midnight. Residents say the noise starts when the sun goes down and continues until early morning.

For Lura Denson, those long hours have taken a toll.

“It goes…,” Denson said, before imitating the sound of a jackhammer.

She can laugh while making the sound, but says living with it is no laughing matter.

“So they start work around 7 p.m. and they don’t get done until 4 a.m.,” she said.
