MADISON (WKOW) -- It's been a wet summer, and that means mosquitoes are especially bad this year.

Although most bites are simply a nuisance, some mosquitoes carry diseases that can lead to health issues.

That's why experts say it's important to take precautions to ensure time outdoors doesn't turn into something more serious.

An infection preventionist at Emplify Health by Gundersen says wearing the proper clothing and avoiding areas where mosquitoes breed are good places to start.

"For me, the biggest takeaway with mosquitoes is the prevention piece, which includes taking care of any standing water in your yard and wearing repellents when you're out and about," said Megan Meller, infection preventionist at Emplify Health by Gundersen.
