For far too many students today, their most vivid food-related college memory will be of not having enough of it. Food insecurity — and its impact on student achievement — is an underappreciated and unfamiliar topic to most, a “silent problem” that stalks campus in plain sight. Even though it is a fact at most colleges, it remains on the edges, generally presenting no outward signs.
“According to the most recent report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO), 23% of undergraduate students and 12% of graduate students experience food insecurity, a rate that is more than double the food insecurity rate for all American households” according to the Minnesota Office of Higher Education.
Studies have found that food insecurity among college students can negatively impact the ability t
