LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - A study released in July shows women are drinking more alcohol.
According to the study, alcohol-related deaths more than doubled between 1999 and 2020.
Heavy drinkers are now developing alcohol-related liver disease at more than twice the rate compared to two decades ago. The risk of significant liver damage has also more than doubled.
The study indicates that women are drinking more frequently and in larger quantities.
Abhishek Satishchandran, a gastroenterologist with U of M Health Sparrow, says mental health is a big contributor to this increase.
