LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - This spring and summer, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources stocked approximately 18.9 million fish across the state.

These fish, representing 10 different species and one hybrid, weighed a combined total of more than 331.5 tons.

Fish stocking, the practice of releasing hatchery-raised fish into natural bodies of water, helps support high-quality fishing opportunities for both residents and visitors.

This activity also contributes an estimated $3.9 billion to Michigan’s economy each year.

The stocking effort required 417 trips and 2,345 hours to complete.

Crews traveled over 981,000 miles using 17 specialized stocking trucks to reach 716 different sites.

In total, fish were stocked in 61 inland lakes and rivers, as well as throughout Lake Michigan.
