WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) - President Donald Trump announced a federal takeover of the Washington, D.C., police department and he says he's sending in the National Guard.

For the first time since Congress passed the 'Home Rule Act' in 1973 allowing D.C. to elect its own leaders a president has taken over the police department and it's against the wishes of the elected government in D.C.

The Army says in a statement the National Guard will provide “administrative, logistics and physical" support of law enforcement.

“It's becoming a situation of complete and total lawlessness,” said Trump.

Last week the president threatened to take over D.C. after he says a DOGE staffer was beaten during a carjacking.

He wrote crime in D.C., "is totally out of control."
