SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Salt Lake City fire officials are asking the community to avoid downtown this morning after a fire threatened several buildings and forced evacuations.

Officials say the call of a fire blazing at 321 South Main Street came in just before 9 p.m. on Monday. All buildings within the area are evacuated at this time. According to initial reports, the evacuated buildings are called "taxpayer buildings," which have commercial businesses on the bottom floors and residential apartments on the higher levels.

Firefighters say if you are in the area, stay inside your home, close all your doors and windows and maybe even turn off our HVAC. "Shifting winds are making smoke conditions unpredictable and potentially hazardous," Salt Lake City Fire Department posted on social media
