SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) —The Salt Lake County Health Department (SLCoHD) announced the first human case of West Nile virus in the state this year.
The infected person is an adult and was hospitalized earlier this month due to neuroinvasive West Nile virus, a more severe form of the disease which can cause debilitating long-term complications or can even be fatal. They have since been released and are now recovering at home, according to SLCoHD.
Public health's investigation determined the individual was likely infected near the Jordan River in the southern half of Salt Lake County at the end of July. The SLCoHD regularly conducts testing of mosquito groups for West Nile virus and identified the virus in Salt Lake County mosquitos in August of 2025.
