New York House Republicans are questioning Canada’s commitment to fighting the wildfires that contributed to the air quality alert issued for the downstate region Aug. 11

In a letter to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney last week, Reps. Elise Stefanik and Nick Langworthy urged the border nation to do more to prevent “unacceptable levels of smoke from Canadian wildfires.”

“The scale and severity of these fires continues to raise concerns about forest management and lack of effective deterrence of human-caused fire,” the Aug. 6 letter from the upstate Republicans said.
