NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The New Orleans Saints may have lost to the Chargers on Sunday, 27-13, in week 1 of preseason, but rookie Tyler Shough may have gained ground in the team’s quarterback competition.

Shough came into the preseason No. 2 on the depth chart as Spencer Rattler held an early edge. Neither quarterback was able to seize the starting job after week 1, but it appeared Shough was able to shorten the gap.

“I’m ready to say this competition is as close as it’s ever been,” said Fox 8 sports anchor Sean Fazende. “We must acknowledge that Shough has played significantly better in game-type situations than any of the scripted practices.”

Shough scored the Saints’ only touchdown of the day with a 54-yard bomb to Mason Tipton.
