HAVERFORD TWP., Pa. (WPVI) -- Haverford Township in Delaware County is a step closer to taking action on electric scooter safety.

It comes in response to growing concerns over the popular devices.

Just two months ago, 12-year-old Abby Gillon was killed in a crash , while riding an electric scooter with her best friend in Aston.

Haverford Township commissioners voted on Monday night to move forward with an ordinance that would require children under 16 to wear helmets while riding electric scooters or e-bikes.

The ordinance would include a grace period through the end of the year, so police could focus on education and issue warnings.

Then, in January, a $25 fine would be issued for violations.
