A judge in Rhode Island issued a preliminary order on Aug. 8 blocking President Donald Trump’s administration from enforcing new restrictions on grants from the Violence Against Women Act.

17 state domestic violence coalitions had sued over requirements that grant recipients comply with the administration’s priorities to receive funding.

U.S. District Senior Judge William E. Smith in Providence, Rhode Island agreed with the coalition that the conditions were likely arbitrary and violated federal law.
