NORMAN — Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer released a statement Tuesday afternoon, calling the allegations he gambled on sports "false."

Allegations circulated Monday evening after a series of screenshots showing Venmo activity from Mateer's account on Nov. 20, 2022, surfaced. The Venmo receipts twice referenced “sports gambling” and a specific game. Mateer, then a true freshman at Washington State, has since deleted all of his Venmo transactions.

In his statement, Mateer confirms the screenshots are legit and are transactions originating from his Venmo account. He says the descriptions were “inside jokes” and not sports betting payments.
