OTTAWA COUNTY, MI — A group of residents and community leaders assembled Monday, Aug. 12, in front of the J.H. Campbell power plant in Port Sheldon Township calling for the plant to finally be shut down.

The group, consisting mostly of people who live near the plant, also included state Rep. Stephen Wooden (D-Grand Rapids), former Ottawa County Commissioner Christian Kleinjans, family physician Dr. Steven Ashmead and Executive Director of MI Energy Options John Kinch.

Consumers Energy intended to close the J.H. Campbell coal plant on May 31 as it moved to adopt cleaner power sources in compliance with Michigan law.

Trump’s Energy Secretary Chris Wright, however, stepped in and invoked an “ energy emergency ” on May 23 ordering the plant to stay open at a minimum until Aug. 21.
