Veterinary forensics is emerging as a powerful tool in the fight against animal cruelty, according to a news release from the University of Guelph.

Thanks to a grant from the Campbell Centre for the Study of Animal Welfare, Dr. Shane Bateman, associate professor at the Ontario Veterinary College, and Gayle Ecker, director of Equine Guelph, have teamed up to launch an educational initiative on the topic.

The project “aims to give veterinarians the knowledge and confidence they need to take an active role in identifying and responding to cases of animal cruelty and neglect,” the news release writes.

Bateman, who has a background in forensic science and veterinary medicine, has always wanted to apply his expertise to a practical cause.
