CNN's Jake Tapper slammed President Donald Trump's excuses for deploying federal troops to Washington, D.C. during his show on Tuesday.

Yesterday, Trump claimed he was deploying federal troops to D.C. to address crime, even though federal data shows that crime rates reached a 30-year low last year. Trump also said he was considering making similar moves in Baltimore, Maryland; Chicago, Illinois; and Los Angeles, California, a claim that caught Tapper by surprise.

Trump deployed the National Guard to Los Angeles earlier this year to address unrest stemming from protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids. According to media reports, the deployed troops made a few arrests and federal prosecutors secured even fewer charges against protesters.

"You have to wonder why President Trump would bring up Los Angeles in his list of very bad cities," Tapper said in his opening monologue. "Is that an admission that his blueprint plan for troop deployment in American cities didn't work?"

"Or, does he think it didn't go far enough?" Taper wondered.

On Tuesday, it was reported that more than 850 officers roamed D.C. streets and made just 23 arrests for crimes ranging from firearms possession to drug crimes.

Elected officials from cities that Trump has named as places he may deploy troops have pushed back on the idea.

“Baltimore is the safest it’s been in over 50 years,” Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott told The Baltimore Banner.
