BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) -- A man's charge was upgraded to first-degree murder after the death of a Baton Rouge police sergeant, months after a hit-and-run.

Gad Black, 41, was initially charged with attempted first-degree murder, hate crimes, and resisting an officer after his June arrest. Black was taken into custody after allegedly hitting BRPD Sgt. Caleb Eisworth on Joor Road near Prescott Road on June 16.

East Baton Rouge Sheriff Sid Gautreaux called the crash a “deliberate and cowardly attack.” Eisworth died Sunday, Aug. 10, at a Baton Rouge hospital.

Records available online show Black remains jailed in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. District Attorney Hillar Moore confirmed to Louisiana First News that he will seek the death penalty.
